How to Draw Fire Step by Step
This tutorial shows how to draw a fire in six easy steps. It gives examples in a simplified beginner friendly style.
The style used for the fire drawing in this particular example is similar to something you may see in a cartoon, comic book or video game. It can help you create art that is not very complicated yet easily recognizable.
It’s recommended that you start the tutorial in pencil and make light and easy to erase line in case you need to make a correction. You can darken them once you have all parts of the fire outlined.
Step 1 – Outline the Bottom of the Flame
Begin by outlining the bottom part of the flame. Make this rounded as shown in the example.
Step 2 – Draw the Upper Part of the Flame
Going up from it’s lower part add the upper splits of the flame. Draw the largest one in the middle with smaller ones to it’s sides. Draw each split with either a curve or a wave to it’s shape.
Step 3 – Draw the Mid Part of the Flame
Inside the main outline of the fire add the smaller middle part of the flame. Draw this with fewer splits as shown in the example.
Step 4 – Draw the Part Innermost Part of the Flame
Inside the fire’s middle portion draw the even smaller inner part of the flame. Give this a tiny barely noticeable split at the bottom and a more obvious split at the top.
Step 5 – Draw the Sparks
For the last part of the fire add the sparks flying up from it’s top. As this is a fairly stylized drawing there are only three of them with one going up from the middle an two on the sides. You can make the sparks fairly close to one another in size but of slightly different shapes.
Once you’ve added the sparks you and are happy with how things look, you can darken your lines by either tracing over them with the pencil or a thin black marker. Otherwise make any corrections you feel are required prior to doing so.
Step 6 – Color the Fire
To color the fire you can use any medium you like or have on hand. Markers can be a good option for brighter looking colors.
Make the outer part of the flame and the sparks red, the middle part orange and the inner part yellow.

As already mentioned at the start, the style used is something that you can find a cartoon, a comic book or a video game.
