How to Draw a Flower Step by Step

This tutorial shows how to draw a flower with a stem and a pair of leaves using examples done in a simple style.

As shown in the preview image above, the goal is to first outline the flower itself and then to add it’s other larger parts followed by the smaller details. You can also apply some color afterwards. Also, please note that if you don’t have the colors shown in the example you can use a different combination.

Overall this guide is fairly easy and can be good if you are a beginner or are simply looking for something nice and fun to draw.

It’s highly recommended that you start the tutorial in pencil as it may take you several tries to properly proportion the petals. Also, be sure to make light lines so that they don’t leave marks when erased. You can darken them once all parts of the flower are outlined.

Step 1 – Draw the Middle of the Flower

Start by drawing the middle part of the flower that the petals will go around. In this case it’s basically a circle that is created out of a series of little curves.

To make drawing it easier you can fist very lightly draw an actual circle and then add the curves around it.

Step 2 – Draw the First Petal

The flower will have five petals in total. Begin by drawing the first one as shown in the example. Make it narrower at the base and wider as it goes out with a rounded outer end.

The size of this petal is important as it will act as a guide for the rest. You want the petals to eventually fit nicely around the middle.

Step 3 – Draw More Petals

Draw two more petals as shown in the example. Try and make them close in shape and size to the first but don’t worry if they are not perfectly so.

If a little more than half the middle is surrounded by the petals once you are done it’s a a good sign that your proportions are on the right track.

Step 4 – Draw the Remaining Petals

Add another pair of petals to finish the outline of the flower. Hopefully you’ve managed to fit them all nicely. If not you might have to erase some or all and start over.

Step 5 – Draw the Stem

For this really simple step add a curved stem going down from the flower. You can draw it to be just a tiny bit wider at the bottom.

Step 6 – Draw the Leaves

Going up from the stem add the leaves. Draw each one with a wave-like shape where it first curves in one direction and then in the the other. Make them narrower at the base, wider in the middle and then narrower again ending with pointy tips.

For drawing the kind of leaf you can find on a tree see:

Step 7 – Draw the Petal Folds & the Inner Middle

To make the flower look a little less plain, first, add a hint of folds that flowers often have in their petals. Show these with a set of lines at the base of each one. Draw a longer line in the middle and shorter ones on it’ sides.

Next, define the inner part of the flower’s middle. You can again make it a circle that is made up of smaller shapes. However, instead of little curves make it more like a start with a lot of points.

Once you’ve added the last set of details trace over your drawing with either darker pencil lines or a thin black marker. Just be sure that you are happy with how the flower looks before doing so because might be hard to make corrections afterwards (especially if using the marker).

Step 8 – Color the Flower

Color the flower using any medium you like. Paints, markers and colored pencils or even a mix of these can all work well.

In this example the flower is colored as follow:

  • Petals – red
  • Outer Middle – yellow
  • Inner Middle – orange
  • Stem & Leaves – green

As was mentioned at the start of the tutorial, you can use different colors if you don’t have the ones in the example or simply want a different looking flower.

For example, purple or blue petals can also look very nice (as shown in the example above).

Conclusion

Drawing a simple flower like the one shown in this tutorial can be fairly easy and fun. Generally you want to start with the larger and more important parts of whatever it is you are trying to draw followed by the smaller details. As was done in the example by first outlining the main parts of the flower itself, followed by adding stem and leaves and finally by again going back to the flower to add the smaller details.
